A word from a recent participant:
I have always been proud of my service, but post military life was bitter for a long time. In June 2006, I was injured in an IED attack near Baqubah, Iraq. Even after making a full physical recovery I felt as though I was unimportant, useless, and dismissed since being injured. As a result I isolated myself in providing for my wife and daughters. I cut ties with the military altogether. I lost friends, that sense of brotherhood, a sense of purpose, and most of all, a loss of pride in my service. I felt abandoned, my self esteem was destroyed.
Hero Expeditions was determined to help me overcome this and get back to living. I reluctantly accepted an invitation to an expedition, but I really didn’t want to go. Much to my surprise, after just spending the weekend with them, my entire outlook on life began to change. When I met the volunteers, I could clearly see their passion for wanting to give veterans an opportunity to come together through their struggles and it was powerful to me.
Not only was I surrounded by veterans who understood how I felt being wounded in action, but they also understood why I was dealing with it the way I was. These meaningful experiences, combined with the ability to understand each other’s struggles, led me to finally begin to heal from the IED attack so many years ago. I now have new friends and I’m appreciative for my life and its blessings. I now tell my story with pride and look forward to interacting with new people, other veterans, and truly living and enjoying life.
Hero Expeditions gave me my joy and pride again. I will never be able to thank their crew, the landowners, donors, and sponsors enough for what they do for all of us.
Respectfully,
Derick Mumma

PROVIDE PROPERTY
We cannot provide opportunities without the generous contributions of landowners and outfitters. From waterfowl and turkeys, to big game and fishing, we receive requests for it all! We are committed to taking good care of our landowners, we tread lightly and get involved with projects on the property to improve the habitat and as a way to show our appreciation.
DONATE GEAR
The appropriate gear and equipment is vital to each expedition that we do. For each and every event we host we provide our participants with gear bags loaded with the tools for the adventure ahead of them. If your company manufactures or sells outdoor gear, or if you’re an individual that has anything they would like to donate, we would be honored to hear from you.
